Self Assessment & Personal Tax
Self Assessment for company directors and dividends
Directors file because of untaxed income, not the role itself. Dividends above £500 trigger it.
Company directors do not automatically need to file Self Assessment just for being a director. They file because they have **untaxed income** — typically dividends above the **£500** allowance. On the return: salary (already PAYE'd), dividends, and any other income. Dividend tax (2026/27): **10.75%** basic, **35.75%** higher, **39.35%** additional — paid through Self Assessment. Payments on account apply to dividend tax too, so a director taking significant dividends often faces a 1.5x January bill. From 6 April 2026, if you are *also* self-employed or a landlord with qualifying income over £50,000, MTD for Income Tax applies — but personal dividends from your company still go through Self Assessment. **Read the full guide at [rraccountants.uk/self-assessment-for-directors](https://rraccountants.uk/self-assessment-for-directors).**
